Paul has 24 years’ experience in the design and development of water infrastructure and particularly in hydro power and irrigation. This includes experience in concept development, consent application, design, construction and operation of hydro power and irrigation schemes. In recent years he has undertaken a significant amount of work on river intakes and fish screens and is a leading engineer in New Zealand in this field. Paul is a member of the Fish Screen Working Group providing engineering advice.

Paul joined RILEY in 1997 as a graduate engineer and in 2001 he left to travel and work overseas where he gained further knowledge and expertise in a variety of areas including water resources, flooding, and river engineering. On his return to New Zealand in 2006 Paul re-joined RILEY as a Senior Water Resources Engineer. He was appointed Manager of the Christchurch office in 2008 and became a Director in 2011. In 2020 Paul moved into a role as a Project Director in Water with a focus on irrigation and fish screening projects.

Paul’s technical experience is across a variety of areas of hydrological and hydraulic engineering, particularly relating to rivers and river intakes. He has been on four educational trips in recent years relating to irrigation and fish screens in Australia and the USA to further his knowledge and understanding in this area.
