Construction Management Projects

Placemakers Retail Centre, Silverdale

Placemakersopen 400
Redevelopment of a 0.9525ha brownfield site (previously a truck depot) as a Placemakers store, administration complex, and car parking. Work included an environmental assessment, geotechnical investigation, and civil design. Earthworks, including minor cutting and bulk filling, were required to create flat platform areas for the car park and storage yard. Due to the challenging geology, the operation involved installing deep counterfort drains to maintain groundwater levels, and using polyrock as a lightweight fill alternative to ensure adequate slope stability. Retaining walls, consisting of round timber pole and steel Universal Column walls up to 6m high and approximately 240m long around the perimeter, were required to support the platform. Increased spacing requirement due to counterfort/stormwater drains crossing the walls and high surcharge loading from vehicle/truck movement and racking storage needed to be considered during the design stage. Stormwater mitigation measures were incorporated into the design to attenuate the runoff generated from the development and provide sufficient treatment prior to discharging into the downstream environment.

Bus Depot, Mount Roskill

Bus Wash crop
Development of a satellite bus depot within the KiwiRail easement adjacent to SH20 and within areas of historical non-certified fill.  The site contains office amenities, staff car parking, and 45 bus parks.  Geotechnical investigations identified highly variable subsurface conditions, including basalt cobbles, silt, building rubble, and organic debris.  Civil engineering aspects involved a detailed earthworks assessment to improve site contours and satisfy layout requirements; construction of reticulation including stormwater, wastewater, water supply, telecommunications, and power; and soft pavement design.  Observations during construction were undertaken for founding conditions, a bus store platform, and underlying fill compaction.

Summerset Retirement Village, Hobsonville

Summerset Retirement Village
Civil, geotechnical, and environmental engineering services for a new 6Ha retirement village development on a coastal site in Hobsonville, Auckland. Input was provided from feasibility stage, through site investigations, resource consenting, detailed design, and construction management and compliance. Development of the coastal site included specific geotechnical investigations and design involving slope stability measures such as counterfort drains, slip remediation works, and protection piling for coastal villas. As the site is located outside the metropolitan urban limit, extensive planning, consultation and negotiation with Auckland Council and Watercare was required to procure extensions of public wastewater and water supply networks to service the development.

Stoddard Road Retail Development
Stoddard Road 400
A 2.6 ha brownfield site in Mt Roskill, Auckland, previously a bus depot, was developed as a large footprint retail centre, with associated car parking and accessways. As lead civil engineering consultant, RILEY undertook project management, detailed civil design, consenting, and construction supervision. Civil, geotechnical, and environmental input included remediation and reinstatement of unsuitable and contaminated ground conditions, public and private reticulation to service the development, and the formation of extensive car park arrangements.

Residential Development, Port Hills
Port Hills Residential Development
Geotechnical investigation, civil engineering design, consenting, and construction monitoring for the redevelopment of a large residential property including a historic three-storey dwelling. Design works involved staged cut and fill operations, cantilevered and anchored retaining walls up to 4m in height, house foundation underpinning, and ancillary civil works involving the re-routing of stormwater, sanitary sewer, and water supply, and pavement design for a steep 1 in 6 grade driveway.
