Resource Development Case Studies

Aria Quarry

The Aria Quarry resource evaluation involved pit planning, stability assessment and the design of a 150m highwall in mudstone, limestone and serpentinite.  RILEY also undertook an evaluation of strippings and an associated bund stability.

Poplar Lane Quarry, Tauranga

The Poplar Quarry project included engineering geological mapping of the site to produce a 1:2000 scale map and report; the development and trialling of Rock Mass Classification (RMC) scheme beneficial to the blasting and processing of the working area.  Large-scale engineering geological mapping of selected batters and floors around the current working area, and selected exposures in future extraction areas.  Resource modelling and quarry geological modelling for resource assessment.

Waiere Quarry, Piopio

Investigation and modelling of serpentine and limestone to provide the best economic return.  The project has been reviewed and redesigned to meet the changing needs of the operation over 30 years.  Work has included resource consent application preparation, overburden stripping management, stormwater control and site rehabilitation.

Whitford Quarry

Investigation to determine aggregate reserves and provide data for the development plans, including a stability survey for the design of final pit batters in fractured greywacke.  Evaluation of quarry wall stability for present and future resource extraction and ultimate use as landfill.  This included mapping of geology and defects, stability and stereonet analysis, reporting and presentation of evidence.
