Irrigation Case Studies

South Ashburton Fish Screen

Design and construction management of an infiltration gallery fish screen on the South Ashburton River.  As part of the consent process, salmon smolt were required to be screened out and returned to the river.  The fish screen design, endorsed by Fish & Game and Environment Canterbury, has been used successfully in a number of intakes.  It has also been included in the NIWA guidelines for fish screens as a good practice design example.

Hurunui Water Project
The Hurunui Water Project proposes to irrigate land in the Amuri Basin, Omihi, and Scargill Valley, with storage provided by a control of Lake Sumner outflows, construction of a dam on the Hurunui South Branch and river intake near the Mandamus River confluence.

RILEY was engaged to undertake a study into the engineering aspects of the proposed scheme to provide supporting information for a resource consent application.

Barrhill Chertsey Irrigation Scheme

Work undertaken by RILEY for this scheme includes:

  • Development options for new off-take structures.
  • Development options for diverting flow directly from the RDR downstream of the Methven check gates to the Ashburton Lyndhurst Irrigation Scheme race.
  • Provision of preliminary options for the sizing and location of potential storage reservoirs at off-take sites.
  • Development of concepts for the intake and pump station at the Rakaia River.

Acton Irrigation Preliminary Design

RILEY was commissioned to undertake preliminary design for an upgrade of the Acton canal to allow for irrigation to this area of the Canterbury plains.  Preliminary design included:

  • An addition to the existing river intake configuration of a settling pond and fish screen.
  • Hydraulic design for an upgrade of the existing canal and canal crossings.
  • Storage and control gate requirements to enable operation of the scheme.
  • Construction cost estimate for the upgrade.
