Bathtub Derby Article

Fri 5 Dec 2008: Engineered Chaos wins the day

Its official – RILEY is the New Zealand Bathtub Derby sail category champion for 2008.

When a flyer for the inaugural Bathtub Derby arrived in the office we were up for the challenge. As there are several sailors amongst us we decided to enter the sail category.

The bathtub arrived and, after much discussion, we set to work. During the following month, evenings and weekends were spent creating a unique trimaran with the bathtub at its centre. There was a lot of work involved but the hand-crafted boat, named Engineered Chaos, was ready just in time.

On race day it was blowing a gale at Takapuna, too dangerous for the myriad of small craft lining the beach, so the event was moved to the harbour, at Bayswater, where the weather was far kinder.

We had a great day. The sun shone; the BBQ was sizzling and many staff turned out to cheer us on. To top it off the RILEY entry won its category.

We are now looking forward to defending our title next year, and hope to come up against more competition and another good day of sailing.
