Following a winter of wet weather, Castor Bay residents noticed a slip on their cliff top property. An investigation by RILEY geotechnical engineers concluded that the most practical and economical method for long term protection of the land and dwelling was the construction of a buried palisade wall. Access to the property was severely restricted so to solve the problem it was decided to use New Zealand’s largest helicopter, a Russian Mi-8, to airlift machinery, poles and equipment to the site. Once completed the wall, designed to prevent regression slumping of surface soils, will have minimal effect on the surrounding environment and will slow further regression of the cliff. |
