| RILEY has been engaged by MWH New Zealand to provide geotechnical support as the Owner’s Engineers for the construction of the Nadaravitu Hydro-electric power scheme in Fiji. The 40MW scheme involves the construction of a 40m high roller compacted concrete dam, 2km of conveyance tunnel and an overland penstock. The project is being undertaken by Sinohydro for the Fijian Electricity Authority (FEA) under an EPC contract. MWH New Zealand has the overall role of Engineer to the Contract and Owner’s Engineer for FEA with a primary focus of ensuring the completed works meet the design requirements. RILEY input on site commenced in August 2009 and during a two and a half year construction period will primarily focus on verification of ground conditions in the tunnel and support requirements. The tunnel is being advanced through basalt rock by drill and blast technique. Geological/geotechnical inspection and verification of ground conditions at the dam site, powerhouse and penstock will also be undertaken as the project progresses. |
