Peter has come full circle from starting at Riley as a graduate engineer from the University of Auckland in November 1989.
Since then, he has amassed more than 30 years’ experience and knowledge, particularly in his passion area of water resource engineering. He built a strong reputation in the power generation industry and as a respected consultant.
Peter moved to Trustpower in the year 2000 and held various senior positions there, including Strategy Manager and General Manager (acting). He has long been a key link in the Trustpower-Riley client relationship.
Much of his career to date has focused on water resource governance, efficiency, development, optimisation, safety and performance. He has overseen many water resource projects, from new developments to major infrastructure upgrades, and has coordinated project inputs across multiple disciplines, both technical and non-technical.
A core area of Peter’s expertise is developing and managing the lifecycle of multi-use assets that combine uses such as hydro-electricity, irrigation, town water supply, stormwater, recreation and commercial. He has also been involved in a wide range of collaborative processes, including resource consenting and the Land and Water Forum.
By 2017, Peter was running his own consultancy and was appointed early 2018 to the Riley Board as an External Director. Board members and shareholders have appreciated his input in this role, where he has provided independent strategic advice and governance leadership.
After Scott Vaughan moved to the new role of Business Operations Manager in late 2020, Peter was appointed Managing Director to succeed him, a role he takes on fully from 2021.
Peter is a past Chairperson of the New Zealand Society on Large Dams and currently represents New Zealand at the International Commission on Large Dams, on its Public Safety committee.
