THE BRIEF
The Buller District’s rugged and remote geography creates ongoing challenges for road maintenance and public safety. When a MetService Red Warning forecast heavy rainfall for the West Coast, concerns grew around the vulnerability of the district’s roading network. With steep terrain and isolated communities, any infrastructure failure posed risks to public safety, connectivity, and the local economy.
Recognising the potential impact, we engaged proactively with Buller District Council ahead of the event. Once flooding and slope instability occurred, we mobilised quickly, with engineers on-site within 12 hours to support the Council’s response through geotechnical assessments, risk identification, and technical decision support under pressure.
THE OUTCOME
Working in a remote and resource‑constrained environment, our team delivered timely, practical assessments that supported both immediate response and long‑term recovery.
Key results:
-
Supported Buller District Council in securing regional government funding for recovery works.
-
Restored connectivity for isolated communities through robust and timely design solutions.
-
Strengthened network resilience, improving preparedness for future heavy rain events.
By combining technical expertise with a pragmatic, hands‑on approach, we helped the Council transition effectively from crisis response to long‑term infrastructure resilience.
