RILEY TEAM
THE BRIEF
Riley carried out geotechnical investigations, design inputs, and construction observations for two five-level apartment buildings with two-level basements.
Given the tight site constraints with residential dwellings on three sides and a busy arterial road, boundary to boundary basement retaining was needed to fully utilise the sites.
Our team carried out pile lateral capacity analysis, retaining wall design analysis, and Burland damage assessments to assess effects on neighbouring properties due to groundwater drawdown and mechanical deflections of basement walls. We worked closely with the structural engineers and contractors to bring the project to life.
THE OUTCOME
The solution comprised 600mm diameter steel reinforced concrete soldier piles around the site perimeter basement retaining up to 4.5m.
A careful construction methodology was devised in coordination with the structural engineer and contractor to avoid any effects on adjacent sites. Intensive monitoring demonstrated that these key parameters were within acceptable limits, thus ensuring stability of the adjacent land and amenities.
